Gift range chart calculator

Turn a campaign goal into a gift pyramid: how many gifts at each level, and how many prospects to line up for each.

The total you want to raise. The chart shows the gifts that get you there.

$

Your lead gift

$15,000

The single largest gift carries 15% of the goal. Line it up before you announce the campaign.

This is a standard gift range chart: the top gifts carry most of the goal. Identify several qualified prospects for each gift you need, because not every ask lands. Adjust the structure to your donor base.

How this is calculated

A standard gift range chart in five tiers. The top gifts carry most of the goal, which is why the lead gift comes first.

Tier totalequalsgoal × tier share

Gift amountequalstier total ÷ gifts in the tier

Prospectsequalsgifts × prospects per gift

  • Tier shares: one lead gift at 15% of the goal, 2 gifts sharing 20%, 4 sharing 20%, 8 sharing 20%, and 20 gifts carrying the last 25%.
  • Prospects per gift: 4 for the top two tiers, 3 for the middle two, and 2 at the base, because not every ask lands.
  • Adjust the structure to your donor base: a congregation with a few very large donors may need a bigger lead gift.

Gift range questions

What is a gift range chart?
A gift range chart (or gift pyramid) breaks a campaign goal into the gifts needed to reach it, from a small number of large lead gifts at the top to many smaller gifts at the base. It is a planning tool that shows how top-heavy major-gift fundraising really is: often the top handful of gifts carry half the goal or more.
How many prospects do I need per gift?
A common rule of thumb is three to four qualified prospects for every gift you need at the top of the chart, because not every ask is successful. Lower tiers can use a slightly lower ratio. This tool applies that logic so you can see how many prospects to identify before the campaign starts.
Does this work for a building or capital campaign?
Yes. Gift range charts are most useful for capital and building campaigns, where a few major gifts make or break the goal. Once your chart is set, route gifts to a restricted capital fund and fulfill multi-year pledges with recurring giving so the money is tracked cleanly from the lead gift down.
